Apical Resection

Apical Resection; It is performed in cases where root canal treatment is insufficient and the patient's pain continues. After unsuccessful root canal treatment, tissues called lesions may form at the tip of the tooth root. Sometimes it is not possible to drain these lesions with root canal treatment. Therefore, Apical Resection is used at this stage.

How Is Apical Resection Performed?

Apical Resection

It is beneficial for the patient who will undergo apical resection to rinse their mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash before the operation. It will be beneficial for the patient to start using a mouthwash containing chlorhexidine 1 day before, in terms of accelerating the wound healing.

The patient's use of painkillers before the treatment ensures that the post-treatment pain is less.

The tooth to be apical resection will be anesthetized with local anesthesia. The tooth will be anesthetized in the same way as a conventional tooth filling and tooth extraction.

Depending on the size of the lesion in the root and the degree of damage to the root of the tooth, the bone surface is opened only from the root tip area or the border where the tooth and gingiva begin, and the inflammatory tissue at the root tip is cleaned. In this process, an incision will be made in a part of the tooth root in order to completely destroy the bacteria.

In cases where adjacent teeth are also affected due to the lesion at the root tip, root canal treatment should be applied to these teeth and apical resection should be performed in the area that will also cover the adjacent teeth.

After the infected area is completely cleaned and the root tip is filled, the removed gingiva is sutured to its place. If the sutures were placed with non-resorbable threads, they will be removed after 7 days.

It is normal to experience problems such as pain, swelling and bruising on the face after the treatment.

After apical resection, the condition of the tooth should be checked. In the 3rd month, 6th month, 12th month and 24th month, it is checked with x-rays, new bone formation around the root is observed.
